Glencore Copper is seeking a global Environment Principal to provide functional support and expertise to the Copper Portfolio to be based in our Johannesburg office in South Africa.

Our Team
The Global Environment & Communities team is a recently established global function supporting existing and future operations and projects. The team is fundamental in setting the department strategy and guiding on best practice across Environment and Social Performance. This team provides functional leadership, strategic direction, guidance and standards, performance expectations, and governance to the Copper department regions and assets across the following areas: environment, communities, social performance, human rights, stakeholder engagement, strategic issue management, among other external factors.

The Opportunity
This role will assist in the development of the Glencore Copper environment policy, strategies, annual plans, targets and performance indicators for the Copper Department.

In this role you will:
  • Contribute to the development of guidelines and protocols based on specific Environment related topics that are Glencore Copper strategic focus areas, risks and opportunities (water management, closure plans, biodiversity, etc)
  • Support the development of Copper programmes in the delivery of key environmental focus areas including, biodiversity, land management, mine rehabilitation and closure, water management and environmental risk analysis.
  • Provide advice on Environment issues including biodiversity land management, mine rehabilitation and closure, water management and environmental risk analysis.
  • Support the sites to establish and maintain environmental systems to manage data, information and measure performance on key metrics and programme delivery.
  • Assist in the data collection, analysis, compilation, and coordination of environmental data for Glencore Copper and Corporate reports.
  • Review Environmental HPRI alerts and investigation reports and provide assistance in all aspects of ICAM investigations and follow up identified actions in the assigned region.
  • Review environmental copper assets risk registers and determine what needs to be changed based on risk type, frequency, and controls related to the risk for the region.
  • Assist in the coordination of the HSEC Assurance Programme. Participation/assistance on Environmental Departmental Audits. Active involvement in Standard compliance verification.

Your training, skills & expertise checklist:
  • Tertiary degree in environment science, environmental engineering, environmental management, mining, social sciences or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years’ experience working in an environmental, communities and social performance role in a mining, oil and gas operation at a regional or corporate level. Consultancy experience also considered.
  • Assurance, auditing and reporting experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing Environment policies, standards and processes in a multinational working environment.
  • Ability to
  • system thinking, and time and project management principles.
  • Proven ability to develop written and presentation reports for senior and executive management.
  • Ability to travel globally and to sites.
  • Fluency in English both written and spoken. Spanish and/or French language would be beneficial.
